And now a few words from me:
Hi my name is Douglas and as you can see, I’m a very handsome fellow. I recently had back surgery and am recovering really well and getting stronger as each day goes by. I love to play but as I am still recovering my foster family keeps play gentle to prevent me from overdoing things. I like to go outside and smell all the chipmunks and squirrels that have visited the garden. I am not allowed to run until my back has healed a little more, but when it has I will be able to investigate at my speed and pleasure. I have loved being at my foster family home but really want to be in a forever home.

And now a few words from my foster family:
Douglas is a very loving pet who loves to cuddle. He has challenged us as he can get out of any crate unless it has a lock on the door. We call him Douglas Houdini. Douglas does best when he knows where you are and can see you. He does not like to be left alone. He is housetrained and only has accidents if he gets excited. Douglas would be very happy in a family with older children. He will return the family’s love tenfold.

Living with the fear of IVDD
We have to come to terms with the fact that our dogs understand more about life than we do in many ways. They don’t know pity. They don’t know “can’t.” They don’t understand “may never.” They don’t give up. They don’t get discouraged. They epitomize “where there is a will, there is a way.” To them, life is about finding a way because they constantly possess a strong will. For them, each new day brings the promise of another good day to get MORE – more food , more treats, and more love. If they are a dachshund, each new day brings another opportunity to chase a squirrel, capture any type of interesting prey, to have a wonderful sniff fest and, maybe, make some progress on the ultimate dachshund quest of world domination through their stomachs.

With this in mind the best thing you can do could is to make the house as back friendly as you can and then do everything in your ability to help them to live the life that THEY value each day. And remember, what we value and they value are very different.
